Music Program
DIRECTOR OF MUSIC, JOHN W. SHANNON, M.F.A.
John Shannon has been the full-time Director of Music and Organist at The Village Chapel in Pinehurst, N.C. since 1983. He was conductor of the Lee County Community Chorus for ten years and former conducter of the Moore County Choral Society.

He received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J., and earned his Masters of Fine Arts degrees in conducting and in organ performance from Penn State. He was awarded the Outstanding Alumni Award from Penn State in March, 2001.

Mr. Shannon has performed choral works with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony, Leopold Stokowski and the American Symphony, Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has worked with great choral directors, such as: Sir David Willcocks, Robert Shaw, and John Rutter.

As a pianist, harpsichordist, and organ recitalist, he has performed in many of the Northeastern states as well as in Belgium, England, and Germany. As a vocalist, he was selected to sing with the Norman Luboff Choir and to perform as one of twelve singers in a consort with Alfred Deller, England’s world-renowned counter-tenor.

He is past President of the Moore County Choral Society, as well as having been a member of the Board of the Classical Concerts, the North Carolina Symphony, and the Weymouth Music Committee.


Darlene Skinner
Family Service Music Ministry Coordinator
 

Darlene Skinner has been the Music Coordinator for the Family Service since the inception of this 9:30 service on September 16, 2001.  She directs “A Joyful Noise” choir and “The Chapel Chimers.”

 

Darlene was a Hoosier and was involved in the music program of the First Presbyterian Church in Warsaw, Indiana, for over thirty years.  For eighteen years she served as Director of Music, directing adults, youth, children, and handbell choirs.  She taught private piano lessons for thirty-five years and accompanied high school and middle school choirs and worked with band students in preparation for contest.

 

She is skilled in piano, organ, flute, violin, and voice.  Currently, she plays flute in the Moore County Concert Band, sings with the Moore County Choral Society and accompanies their small ensemble, and is a member of Moore County Music Society.

 

She is married to Dale Skinner, and they have two sons and four grandchildren living in Charlotte.

MUSIC IN THE VILLAGE CHAPEL

The Village Chapel Choir consists of 25 + singers who enjoying leading the congregation every week of the year in worship at the 11:00 A.M. service. They rehearse every Thursday evening September - June from 5:00 - 6:30 P.M. Each Easter season the choir presents a major work with members of the North Carolina Symphony and guest soloists

The music for worship in the Chapel consists of traditional anthems from the baroque, classical, and romantic periods right up to today’s contemporary Christian sounds of John Rutter, Mark Hayes, Craig Courtney, etc.

The Chapel has a newly restored four-manual Cornel Zimmer organ with all of the latest digital capabilities. It is the largest in Moore County.
